Valkyrie Profile is a role-playing video game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation. It was released on December 22, 1999 in Japan and on August 29, 2000 in North America. valkyrieprofile-01eThe game was both a commercial and critical success, spawning a few related titles on different consoles. A PlayStation 2 sequel, titled Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, was released in 2006 in Japan and North America, and 2007 in Europe. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume for the Nintendo DS was released in Japan in 2008, March 17, 2009 in North America and on April 3, 2009 in all PAL regions.

Valkyrie Profile’s storyline centers on Norse mythology. A war between Ragnarok and Odin is close to breaking out in Valhalla while a conflict on Earth is also brewing. As a Valkyrie, the player’s role is to go down to Earth and recruit 24 fallen soldiers to join the fight against Ragnarok. As each soldier’s spirit is recruited it must be trained and eventually sent to Valhalla to fight beside Odin. Deciding when to send a soldier to Valhalla impacts the game as weak soldiers may perish while strong soldiers may be useless if sent too late.

While adventuring, only a total of three other warriors may be in your party at any one time. When in dungeons the game becomes a side-scrolling platform game in which the player will be able to run, jump, and attack. Battles outside of dungeons are turn-based and include combination attacks.

Once a bustling city housing over 5,000 people, a series of disastrous quakes separated the city of Leá Monde from the living world. Now accessible only though gnarled catacombs that run from the city to the shore, it’s a foreboding place where it’s rumored the dead don’t quite die.

It’s in this cheerful setting that we find ourselves accompanying Ashley Riot as he pursues the enigmatic but charismatic leader of the Müllenkamp cult into the doomed city. Vagrant Story takes the player though the catacombs and into the city of Leá Monde all to answer the question of what happened to everyone’s favorite Risk Breaker during the week he vanished into the town.

vagrantstory-01bVagrant Story isn’t like your typical Square offering however. While posing a complex storyline, they’re adapted an almost action based format for the journey. You’ll have to jump precise jumps, solve block puzzles and navigate mazes all by yourself in a fashion strongly reminiscent of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. On the flip side, Square’s fused a menu driven battle interface with a reflex driven combo and defense for a new approach to your basic role playing combat. The combo system employs a new wrinkle. The more successive strikes you manage to connect with, the more often you successfully defend, the higher your Risk points will go. The higher your risk, the more ragged your defense. You’ll also miss more frequently although your chances of making a critical hit increase. Think of it as a fatigue and stress level all rolled into one. In all, it makes for a mix that incorporates multiple game styles while remaining aloof from them all at the same time.

Expect to spend a lot of time alone with Continue reading ‘Vagrant Story, (SLPS-02377)’ »

X is Clamp’s foray into apocalyptic fiction. It combines elements from various end of the world scenarios, both secular and religious, with its own mythos. The story takes place at the end of days, in the year 1999. The series follows Kamui Shiro, a young esper who returns home to Tokyo after a six-year absence to face his destiny as the one who will determine humanity’s fate. The series is intended for a female audience, so X is drawn in the ornate style characteristic of shojo manga but with the emphasis on moral conflict and gruesome violence expected of seinen works. The story is influenced by the works of Go Nagai and Kyokutei Bakin.

x1999-01cThe events take place in 1999. The end of the world is fast approaching as superhuman individuals gather and take sides in the city of Tokyo, the battle site of Armageddon. The key player in this day of reckoning is Kamui Shiro, a young man who returns home to Tokyo after a six-year absence to protect those dearest to him, Kotori and Fuma Monou, and fulfill his mother’s dying wish.

Unbeknownst to the three friends, Kamui and Fuma are destined to fight each other during the end of the world. The first half of the series focuses on the gathering of the soldiers in the final battle and culminates with Kotori’s death at the hands of her brother Fuma, sealing Kamui’s choice as the protector of mankind and Fuma’s place as his foil. The second half follows Kamui as he grows into his role as savior while the world moves along toward its inevitable destruction.

The story is Kamui’s heroic journey, where the narrative places an emphasis on his choices and how they affect the world around him as he attempts to reconcile his dual destinies. Continue reading ‘TV Animation X – Unmei No Sentaku, (SLPS-03459)’ »

Picking up where Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation left off, Tomb Raider Chronicles begins at a memorial service for the intrepid heroine Lara Croft. While friends and family recollect her past adventures through full-motion video sequences, you’ll guide Lara through four previously untold scenarios. These scenarios take place in the city of Rome, aboard a German U-Boat, from a remote island located in Ireland, and within a technologically advanced tower. You’ll use the full-grown adventurer in addition to the 16-year-old introduced in The Last Revelation as you advance through the game. Levels highlight certain aspects of the Tomb Raider series.

tombraider-05eRather than blasting enemy forces, the use of deception and puzzle solving is required on the Irish levels. Whereas the Rome levels are built upon exploration, the German U-Boat is crawling with baddies. Receiving instruction from a faithful companion named ZIP, the tower levels require stealth tactics and strategy.

Stealth is one of the many new features in Tomb Raider Chronicles. Unlike previous titles in the series, enemies react to both sound and sight; in certain missions, for example, you’ll want to be as quiet as possible. Lara is also given some new moves (tightropes, suspended bars) and commands with corresponding animations.

Our faithful heroine can search through top-secret file cabinets and desk drawers while looking for clues and key items. Speaking of which, this game offers an assortment of interactive items as well as an improved version of the item combine feature.

Lara also has access to new weapons including a sniper rifle and a grappling hook gun; all the weapons you loved in the previous Tomb Raider games are also intact. In addition to the aforementioned stealth tactics, the heroine can now engage in sneaky hand-to-hand combat. Here, she’ll secretively incapacitate the desired enemy with chloroform or another substance/weapon.

Tomb Raider Chronicles also features Continue reading ‘Tomb Raider 5, (SLPM-86779)’ »
