Capcom Generation Vol. 2: Makai to Kishi contains the first three titles of the Ghosts ‘n Goblins (Makaimura) series.

* Ghosts ‘n Goblins (Makaimura)
* Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (Dai Makaimura)
* Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (Cho Makaimura)

– Ghosts ‘n Goblins is a platform game where the player controls a knight, named Arthur, who must defeat zombies, demons and other un-dead creatures in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin. Along the way the player can pick up new weapons, bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help in this task. The game is often considered very difficult by arcade standards and is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult games released for the NES.[citation needed] If the player loses a life, he is returned to the start of the level, or the halfway point if he has managed to get that far. Furthermore, each life can only last a certain length of time (generally around three minutes), the clock being reset at the start of a level. If the clock does run out, the player instantly loses that life.

CapcomRetroGameCollection-02a– Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is a platform game/run and gun developed by Capcom and released as an arcade game in 1988, and subsequently ported to a number of other platforms. It is the sequel to Ghosts ‘n Goblins, and forerunner to the Super NES game Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts.

The game-play for Ghouls n’ Ghosts is similar to that of Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The player controls the knight Arthur, who must advance through a series of eerie levels and defeat a number of un-dead and demonic creatures in his quest to restore the souls stolen by Lucifer (Loki in the English-language Sega Genesis and Sega Master System versions), including the soul of his lover, Princess Prin Prin. Along the way, Arthur can pick up a variety of weapons and armor to help him in his quest.

While the core game-play remains the same as its predecessor, the game now allows Arthur to fire directly upward and directly downward.

By jumping in certain spots, players can cause a treasure chest to erupt from the ground. By firing his weapon at the chest, players may uncover new weapons, gold armor or an evil magician that changes Arthur into an elderly man or a helpless duck. The gold armor allows players to charge up the weapon to release a powerful magical attack. Each weapon has its own special attack. From the creators of the comic adventure Earthworm Jim comes Wild 9 for the PlayStation. The game follows the story of Wex Major, leader of the Wild 9, a team made up of individuals with offbeat attributes, personalities (multiple ones, in some instances) and powers. Unfortunately, eight of the nine members in Wild 9 have been kidnapped by the evil Karn, and it’s up to the remaining member, Wex, to rescue them and dispose of his nemesis once and for all.

Wex’s special weapon is a “rig” attached to his arm. The rig is essentially an electronic grappling hook that can be used to climb up ledges or lasso enemies. Once you have the enemy captured, you can slam him back and forth on the ground until he explodes. If that’s too simple a death for you, you can drop enemies off of cliffs or send them into spinning fans, flames and grinders.

Wildroid 9, (SCPS-10080)Wild 9 is a side-scrolling platform game with 3D modeled effects in the foreground and background. While you can venture into and out of the backgrounds at specific points in the game, most levels involve jumping from platform to platform, rescuing one of your teammates and fighting the occasional boss. Secrets are hidden throughout the levels, and collecting 100 Wild 9 coins will earn you an extra continue at the end of each stage.

Manufacturer’s description:
Beyond your wildest expectations. The developers of Earthworm Jim bring you an intergalactic battle of good vs. evil guaranteed to re-ignite your passion for video gaming. Continue reading ‘Wildroid 9, (SCPS-10080)’ »

Whizz was an Amiga and PC game created by Flair and ported in 1997 to the PlayStation and Saturn in Europe and Japan. Also called ‘Akupyon Game Whizz’ in Japan. Whizz is one of the few 3D platformers to use an isometric viewpoint. The controls reflect this, with moving the controller to the right actually moving the character down and right, moving it down and right moving the character down directly, and so on.

Whizz-01dEach level is played out against a time limit, and the paths through the level aren’t always clear-cut. There are four different types of doors, each of which needs a particular icon to pass (the icons represent the door type, such as ice or bricks, rather than hot water or a key, or anything you’d logically expect to clear the path). You can avoid the baddies, which may be the best option, as killing them costs you some energy this reduces the significance of the points system. Take control in this unique isometric 3D platform game as you race against the clock to find your way to reach the level goal.

This game is about a race between Whizz, a bunny with a hot air balloon, and a rat with a zeppelin. Even though the game doesn’t really show the rat often, the first intro cut scene shows that the rat is cheating by shooting Whizz down with his shotgun. Now Whizz must search throughout the land for another hot air balloon.

Whizz has a mushroom as a health bar, collects flags and gems for points, and gains an extra life after getting 10,000 points. He fights with a spinning attack which can kill some of the enemies and transform them into mushrooms that can add some health to the mushroom health bar.
Unfortunately, to perform such a spinning attack he uses Continue reading ‘Whizz, (SLPS-00939)’ »

Picking up where Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation left off, Tomb Raider Chronicles begins at a memorial service for the intrepid heroine Lara Croft. While friends and family recollect her past adventures through full-motion video sequences, you’ll guide Lara through four previously untold scenarios. These scenarios take place in the city of Rome, aboard a German U-Boat, from a remote island located in Ireland, and within a technologically advanced tower. You’ll use the full-grown adventurer in addition to the 16-year-old introduced in The Last Revelation as you advance through the game. Levels highlight certain aspects of the Tomb Raider series.

tombraider-05eRather than blasting enemy forces, the use of deception and puzzle solving is required on the Irish levels. Whereas the Rome levels are built upon exploration, the German U-Boat is crawling with baddies. Receiving instruction from a faithful companion named ZIP, the tower levels require stealth tactics and strategy.

Stealth is one of the many new features in Tomb Raider Chronicles. Unlike previous titles in the series, enemies react to both sound and sight; in certain missions, for example, you’ll want to be as quiet as possible. Lara is also given some new moves (tightropes, suspended bars) and commands with corresponding animations.

Our faithful heroine can search through top-secret file cabinets and desk drawers while looking for clues and key items. Speaking of which, this game offers an assortment of interactive items as well as an improved version of the item combine feature.

Lara also has access to new weapons including a sniper rifle and a grappling hook gun; all the weapons you loved in the previous Tomb Raider games are also intact. In addition to the aforementioned stealth tactics, the heroine can now engage in sneaky hand-to-hand combat. Here, she’ll secretively incapacitate the desired enemy with chloroform or another substance/weapon.

Tomb Raider Chronicles also features Continue reading ‘Tomb Raider 5, (SLPM-86779)’ »

As a teen, Lara Croft discovers her true roots as an adventurer in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation for the PlayStation, the fourth installment of the Tomb Raider 3D action-adventure franchise. She’s lived a life surrounded by servants, social events and high society. One day she discovers Professor Werner Von Croy, a respected archaeologist whose work would soon take Lara on a tour of Cambodia. There she would learn, study, and be inspired by this search for adventure from around the world, only to end up witnessing Von Croy’s entrapment in a cave now buried in the desert’s sandy blanket.

tombraider-04dLara Croft is now grown up and in search of this secret tomb that compels her to travel to modern Egypt. As Lara, you’ll experience new enemies, infernal devices and puzzles, and new weapons and ammo. The evil god Set is about to unleash his plague unto the earth due to Von Croy’s eagerness for removing the ancient amulet where he is now trapped… and who knows what else might happen!

The game features a new graphics engine with true, real time dynamic lighting, smoother frame rate, and more color and animation not seen in previous Tomb Raider titles. Weapons and tools like the revolver, crossbow, binoculars, and various types of ammo will help you in your thirst for adventure in these huge, cavernous levels. The ammunition for some weapons allow you to switch between multiple types of rounds.

New moves based on a real physics engine is included, like swinging from ropes, lighting torches, and kicking down doors. There’s also a revised inventory system allowing you to combine objects in a similar fashion to the Resident Evil series. And you’ll be assisting your “partners” such as the Egyptian tour guide who lights torches for you. He’ll need to get through some gates in order to pinpoint certain criteria that needs attention, like a switch or secret door. Continue reading ‘Tomb Raider 4, (SLPS-02803)’ »
