Japanese School Uniform Shoes, Uwabaki Slippers, Made In Japan!

Shoe uppers are made from tough, breathable, smooth cotton. Sole is tough, slip-resistant, water-proof rubber in your choice of bright colors!

These slippers have a strong pull-tab on the heel, and elastic stretch band over the arch for easy, comfortable wear. The unisex design is worn by both boys and girls.

Uwabaki slippers should be hand-washed, however, they can be machine washed on a delicate cycle without damage. They can even take a mild bleach.

When you enter a school building in Japan, you will need to change your shoes.  These soft “Inside” shoes are called “Uwabaki”. They are cloth-and-rubber slipper-shoes worn by all students in school. At the entrance to every school is the large “Genkan” area with many rows of “cubbie” style lockers. Here everyone changes from their “outdoor shoes” and into uwabaki upon entering the school. The special “cubbie” lockers are provided to hold each students’ shoes (these lockers are also frequently used as mailboxes for passing notes).

A student’s grade level is often indicated by a colored stripe across the toes; the body color of the slipper is always white. Girls often add cute designs and colors to their uwabaki with markers in order to add some personal customization and individuality to their school uniforms. Anime movies with any school scenes inevitably shows characters wearing these “inside shoes”, whose somewhat informal appearance (often simplified further to ease animation) can make a strange contrast to the more formal school uniforms.
